Joseph Allen Stith Jr. and Katina Patrice Stith

Born on December 15th, 1970, and June 23rd, 1972 in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Katina: The high school that our oldest daughter was going to at the time was off-base. And it was in this very small community. So, here we are with the high school, full of military children, where these children have been exposed to every culture there is. And then you have people that grew up in that town that has not. So the Vice Principal, we had a one-on-one with him.

Joseph: Yeah. There are very few people that I have had a actual physical, not just metaphorically, but an actual bad taste in my mouth for. And he is one of them.

Katina: Very much so. He was very much like, yes, I don't like you because you're Black.

Joseph: He stepped right out of a-

Katina: Yeah.

Joseph: He stepped right out of a slavery time movie, you know? Mean white guy from the South. That's what he acted like. He thought he was going to be able to intimidate us in the usual way. And it was like, he don't know who sitting across the table from, does he?

Katina: Oh no.

Joseph: We were having a heated conversation in his office about the way he was handling our daughter. Versus the way he handled another child. Because they had a little beef.

Katina: He, what he did was he was suspending our daughter.

Joseph: And not the other.

Katina: And not the other. And so we went to address him about that. Yeah.

Joseph: Right. And because we had the gall to show up and question him about it, he wanted to intimidate us by saying, do I need to go and, you know, call the sheriff? And my wife was like, oh, I know who the sheriff is. Call him.

Katina: Call him. I think I got it his number. Let me pull up the number.

Joseph: I think I’ve got his number. And that's when she made the phone call to the base and all of that stuff and it all, it just, fireworks from that point.

Katina: Yeah. We'll never forget that. He leaned in on his desk. You know? And it was like, I think he thought we were going to, you know, like Joseph said, be very intimidated by that.

Joseph: I think if I had not been the type of person who was always a bit timid, the only other alternative to that was to grab him by his jacket and yank him across his desk. That was that was the only other alternative to that situation

Joseph: Helmut Schugins. Yeah, you couldn't have written it. You couldn't have written it any better. I mean, what a character. And he really was a character. Yeah, it sounds  fiction. But that was it. That was his name. Helmut Schugins.
